Trying to do better about reposting interesting/amusing/annoying things I get sent at work (aren't you excited!)

Bush Admin. proposes a "rule" that would reclassify almost all forms of birth control as abortions.

A brilliant summary of the entitlement generation.  Call the Waaaaaaambulance.

ElI was asked for some thoughts on my internship to be posted on PP Missouri's blog.  I really feel like there's no way I can condense my thoughts into something so short...i feel like I could talk about this for hours (and I'm sure most of you have been subjected to me doing so) ;-)  Anyway, this is what I wrote for them, if you're interested.

Suck it anti-choice legislators!

For those of you that have been following the continuing saga of HB1055 (passed last year), We got word today that the Columbia clinic will not be required to widen halls, raise ceilings, and expand exam rooms (i.e. rebuild our whole building)  We will only have to widen our doorways and put new doors in.  There are a couple of additional requirements for us to meet the "ambulatory surgical center" standards, but it's not going to be NEARLY as costly and time consuming as we were afraid it would be, and it won't disrupt services at all.

Take that crazy people who wanted to close down our clinic!  Now if only we can get through the next two weeks unscathed...

Lest you should think that further regulating abortion in your state would actually decrease abortions, think again.

Also, if you thought Missouri's abortion bill was bad, check out the one in Kansas.  I would   ALLOW HUSBANDS AND FAMILY MEMBERS TO PREVENT YOU FROM OBTAINING AN ABORTION.  I don't think I need to say anything else.  The frightening thing here is that even though the governor will veto the bill, there was only a two vote difference in the legislature, so the veto could potentially get overridden.  *headdesk*  These people are fucking insane.

I've been trying for some time to come up with the energy to do a post on the horrendously stupid and insulting (and unconstitutional) abortion bill that's in both the House and the Senate right now.  (HB1831/SB1058).  Rather than doing a summary myself, I've found a pretty good summary of the legislation and its impact here.  It's worth checking out the NARAL legal analysis as well if you're interested in some of the technical aspects and their implications as well.

The Reader's Digest version is this:  Some Missouri lawmakers think that women (esp. pregnant women, with all those hormones flying around, ONOZ!) are incompetent to make decisions, and shouldn't be allowed to make them if they've ever had a conversation with anyone that involved the word "abortion."  *rolls eyes*

Really, if you don't read anything else on here, read this.  Many of us take our rights for granted.  At very least, be aware that people are actively trying to take them away.

Girls in Arizona to only get abortions if they're 'mature' enough.

"Supporters say that HB 2263 just codifies a 2003 ruling on the existing parental-consent law by the Arizona Court of Appeals, in which the court specified criteria that can be used to determine if a minor is mature enough to make the decision to have an abortion.

Under the bill, the court could consider factors, including whether the minor has traveled on her own, handled her own finances, lived outside her parents' home and made other significant decisions."

Because if a girl has never gotten to travel on her own (totally a reasonable rule to apply for kids living in poverty!), or has never handled her own finances, she's totally not mature enough to have an abortion, because she's never made a significant decision in her life.

But of course she IS mature enough to give birth to and care for a child.  You don't need to pass a maturity test to make the decision to be a mother, because you'll never have to worry about significant decisions or paying bills or anything like that.

Think about this.  THINK ABOUT IT.  I just...I...

*brain explodes*

This video was going around the office today and just about killed me.  The best part is the warning at the end ;-)

I found this article really interesting, especially because it highlights a lot of things that I really hate about the abortion debate, namely, how we all tend to demonize each other...on both sides.

I thought this was pretty awesome. The people at the StL clinic forwarded to the group a New York Times article about the primaries in Missouri. Apparently the related photo slideshow included a picture that was taken at our Roe Anniversary event a few weeks ago! :-)

I find it especially amusing because I remember watching the guy take this picture and thinking "wow, that looks like a random thing to take a picture of" but clearly it turned out well.

What's even more awesome? If you look closely you can see that the top name on the Prevention First petitions is Jessica Sims!
We have a minor local celebrity in the New York Times!
